Mental Health Support for Parents of the Youngest Ones

Finding time for yourself during maternity or parental leave can be quite challenging. Even though we call it “leave,” it’s often a period that can be quite demanding. Through the “Peripatetics with a Stroller” project, I want to bring mental health care closer to the reality and possibilities of parents with the youngest children.

About Peripatetics

Peripatetics is a form of supportive conversation that takes place while walking. This approach is based on the premise that movement supports thinking – when the body is actively moving, our thoughts and feelings often find their direction more quickly. The combination of movement, fresh air, and personal contact not only promotes better expression but also helps in perceiving oneself better.

Peripatetics with a Stroller

I decided to offer this form of support specifically to parents with strollers because it connects parents’ everyday activity with mental health care, making it accessible even to those parents who don’t have or cannot arrange childcare that would allow them to attend traditional sessions.

Tailored Specifically for Parents

Considering the specific needs of parents with small children, peripatetics with a stroller sessions are extended. Instead of the standard 50 minutes, they last 75 minutes, which is half an hour longer. This extra time can be flexibly used – whether for a longer conversation, or for feeding, changing diapers, or calming a crying baby – because that’s exactly why these extra minutes are there.

Moreover, for parents receiving maternity benefits (PPM) or parental allowance, the price is reduced to 1100 CZK.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Who is peripatetics with a stroller for?

Peripatetics with a stroller is intended for all parents of young children who want to take care of their mental health but also need to have their child with them, or are unable to arrange childcare. In terms of the child’s age, there is no strict limit, but sessions are suitable for parents of children who are in a stroller (=they don’t run around, allowing you to focus on yourself as much as possible) and are of a younger age (=it’s not a problem to talk about various topics in front of them, which can be an issue with already talking children). Sessions are based on psychological counseling and coaching.

Where do the sessions take place?

Sessions are primarily offered in Prague in Letná Park and Stromovka Park, however, we can individually arrange another location. In such a case, please write to denisa@davede.eu before booking a date.

What if it rains or the weather is bad?

In case of unfavorable weather, we can agree to postpone the appointment, or arrange an alternative method of meeting (e.g., online consultation, if it is suitable for you at that moment). Flexibility is key.

How long does one session last and what does it cost?

One session lasts 75 minutes. The price for parents receiving maternity benefits (PPM) or parental allowance is reduced to 1100 CZK. In case of shifting the session to an online format, the price remains the same, however, the session duration is already a classic 50 minutes (unless otherwise agreed).

Will you also have a stroller with a baby with you?

Yes, my “mini co-therapist” – my own baby in a stroller – often accompanies me on the walk. However, sometimes my little co-therapist has another program or simply cannot come for some reason. In such cases, I will come to our meeting alone. The important thing is that I will always adapt to your needs and be available to you. If it happens that my baby makes the smooth running of the session impossible and even the extra 25 minutes of time are not enough, we will arrange a free replacement session.

Do I need to prepare specifically for the session?

No, no special preparation is necessary. Just come with an open mind and a willingness to share your feelings and thoughts. Any preparations you make will be the same as when you go out with a stroller.

Can I come to the session with more children (e.g., siblings)?

Individual work with one parent and their baby (or babies) in a stroller is preferred so that the parent can fully concentrate. If you have an older child who is able to entertain themselves during the walk or also in a stroller, that is possible. However, the primary goal is space for the parent, so please consider whether you will truly have this space for yourself and be able to speak freely. Not every topic may be comfortable or appropriate in front of an older, talking child.

Is peripatetics with a stroller suitable for fathers too?

Absolutely! Peripatetics is intended for any parent who is on maternity/parental leave with children and feels the need for support.

Is it possible to arrange a session without a stroller if I have the child in a carrier/wrap?

Yes, of course. If you find it easier to walk with your child in a carrier or wrap, that’s perfectly fine. Movement and the ability to be with your child are important.

I’m not a parent, but peripatetics interested me. Is this form of support for me too?

Yes, peripatetics as such is suitable for anyone who prefers a supportive conversation while walking. If you are interested in a peripatetic session open to anyone, you can contact me at denisa@davede.eu – I plan to open sessions in this format to the wider public as well.
